Finding Your Foundation
The New Year is all about thinking forward, making resolutions and reorganizing everything. Right? Well, I love all of that, especially given that my company is based on that thought process, however I find myself looking back a bit this January to what I can feel good about from this past year and how all of the accomplishments provided a solid foundation for me to be able to even consider new resolutions for 2014.
I can still sense the wind blowing in my face with splashes of salt water from the boat ride in Guatemala. I had the opportunity to meet up with Gus, a true humanitarian, giving back to his native country after growing up in the U.S., and accompany him on a trip along the outer edge of Guatemala down a river to the Mayan villages. We specifically had a stop scheduled at a very small Mayan school to deliver school supplies that we had collected.
“We specifically had a stop scheduled at a very small Mayan school to deliver school supplies that we had collected.”
I will always remember the initial shock of seeing a small concrete block building with only cut outs for doors and windows. But leaving with the greatest sense of loving life because the school children’s eyes and squeals of happiness will forever ring in my mind. They were so thankful and so pleased to receive their small pads of paper and pencils and books and crayons, and genuinely excited to share their voices in song and hugs of thanks for our presence that day.
“Those children gave me the opportunity to see so much more than a country.”
I thought I was setting out on a trip to see a new land, and that I did and much more. Those children gave me the opportunity to see so much more than a country. I now have a forever joy, understanding and solace when I remember that visit. I want to bring that feeling to my new year as a basis to move forward. Maybe you’ve had an opportunity that provided something more then what it began. That place, that feeling… I hope will provide you, as it does me, with a deep, stable base in which to resolve to do what is needed in your New Year.
